Many a professional marine engineers, artificers, mechanicians and engineering mechanics have passed through the portals of INS Shivaji since its commissioning (as HMIS Shivaji) in 1945. The alumni of INS Shivaji have served honorably in the Indian Navy. While many of them have risen in Service to become the Chief of Materiel and other Flag ranks, most of them have also done extremely well in their second careers in the manufacturing and shipbuilding industry, in the academic world and as administrators in various other fields. Significant achievers are VAdm Dayashankar (Retd), who, in addition to being the Chief of Materiel, also went on to become the Controller General of Defence Production in the Ministry of Defence. One of his notable contributions include the indigenous development of the 3-tonner truck, the 'Shaktiman', which had been the mainstay of the Indian Army for decades. Similarly, Cmde A Paulraj (Retd) led the development of a large surface ship sonar APSOH, which became the fleet sonar for the Indian Navy and was a landmark achievement in Indian Electronics. Later, Cmde Paulraj founded three national level research centres in India: the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Defence R&D Organization, the Central Research Laboratories, Bharat Electronics, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, Dept. of Electronics(as co-founder).

Mandate of INS Shivaji Alumni Forum

In order to foster stronger bonds amongst the alumni and the establishment, and to create a network enabling them to remain engaged with their alma mater, an alumni forum of INS Shivaji has been formed. The mandate of the forum being formed would be to facilitate interaction/ guest lectures by distinguished alumni, collaborative research projects with industry and academia, participation in technical seminars/ workshops/ major events and also provide an opportunity to the alumni to contribute and support the future growth of the establishment.
